I want to buy the box set that apple is selling for 169.99 but I want to know if I can put it on both macbooks I have or if it only allows it to be downloaded onto one mac.

Buy the Family Box for 5 licenses and the normal Mac Box for 1. Basically spend a little more to install it on up to 5 computers, otherwise it’s one only.
A nice way to save cash is to split the cost with a few friends, and buy it together.

*Can* you install it on multiple Macs? Yes.
Is it *legal* to do so? Not if you buy the single user license – the Family Pack allows you to install it on up to 5 Macs, but only ones in your own home or owned by you (so no splitting it with friends who don’t live with you).
It’s physically possible to install on multiple computers – Apple doesn’t require keys like Windows does. But the EULA (End User License Agreement) only allows for one install.
